Survey of Dutch insurers: what do they think of home batteries and how do they deal with them?

Self-generated or cheaply purchased energy can be stored using a home battery. This reduces the price per kWh and increases the quality of home batteries, thanks to better and better technology. Due to the (possible) abolition of the net-metering scheme, more and more individuals are switching to home batteries.

How do insurers feel about your home battery? Does it potentially affect your home building or home insurance when it comes to things like fire safety.

During the months of October and November 2023, an independent survey of 12 major insurers took place. After all, you better be well prepared when buying a home battery.

A number of conclusions were drawn from this research, listed below are the 3 most important ones:

  • Many insurers have nothing about home batteries in their policy conditions
  • Many insurers find home batteries fit in with solar panels, inverters and heat pumps
  • Advice: leave home battery installation to a licensed installer.
